GEO for AI Search: How to Appear in ChatGPT Answers

More customers are skipping Google and the usual list of ten results. Instead, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity a complete question and receive one answer with a few recommendations. If your business is not mentioned in that answer, it effectively does not exist for that customer. This is called GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization. Put simply, it means making your site easier to find through AI search engines.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

With SEO, the goal is to rank high in a list of results. With GEO, the goal is to be cited inside an answer. The wording sounds similar, but the practical difference is significant. An AI search engine is not looking for the page with the most keywords. It is looking for a source that answers the question clearly and credibly.

The good news is that GEO and SEO are not at odds. Most of what helps GEO also helps SEO. Many AI search engines rely on search results to find their sources.

Why does this matter to a small business?

The questions customers ask AI are often buying questions: “Which accountant in Haifa specializes in exempt dealers?”, “How much does it cost to install a mini-central air-conditioning system?”, or “What is the difference between comprehensive and third-party car insurance?” A business with a clear, useful answer to those questions on its website has a better chance of being included.

Small businesses have another advantage. The size of the website matters less in AI search than it often does in Google. One page that answers a specific question well can be cited alongside much larger sites.

5 things that help you appear in AI answers

  1. Answer real questions directly. Use a question as the heading and put a direct answer in the next two or three lines. Do not make readers work through a long introduction before reaching the point.
  2. Add a structured question and answer section. An FAQ block with structured data, or Schema, helps search engines understand exactly which question each paragraph answers.
  3. Be specific. Include price ranges, timelines, conditions, and service areas. A general answer such as “it depends” is rarely useful enough to cite.
  4. Explain the limitations too. Content that says when a service is not suitable tends to appear more credible to both people and search engines.
  5. Keep the site accessible to crawlers. Use a fast site with real text, not only images, and make sure the AI search crawlers are not blocked accidentally in robots.txt.

How to check where you stand

The simplest test is also one of the most useful. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity five questions your customers genuinely ask, and record which businesses they mention. If your competitors appear and you do not, review the cited pages. Look for the question they answer that your site does not.

What not to do

Do not publish dozens of nearly identical pages generated automatically. Do not invent data or reviews, and do not stuff pages with keywords. AI search engines are relatively good at identifying empty content, and the same content can also hurt your performance in Google.

Questions we get asked

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? At the moment, there is no official way to buy a place in an organic answer. Some companies are experimenting with advertising inside chat products, but that is a separate channel.

How long does it take to see results? It varies considerably between search engines. Some update quickly through search, while others move slowly. Treat it like SEO: think in months, not days. It is also important to say that no one can guarantee an appearance.

Should we stop doing SEO? No. Good SEO is the foundation of GEO. The emphasis changes, with less focus on keywords and more focus on clear answers to real questions.

How do we measure it? There is still no perfect measurement tool. A regular manual check of the important questions, combined with tracking traffic from AI tools in your website reports, is a useful starting point.
